MTV writes:

With their brand-new “Closer to the Edge” video — which premiered on Monday (August 16) — 30 Seconds to Mars have joined a special fraternity. For about as long as there have been rock videos, there have also been “road videos,” grand testaments to the highs and lows, the triumphs and tragedies, the sheer excitement and terrifying monotony that come with being a touring rock-and-roll band.

Documenting your life on the bus is as much a rite of passage as getting your first platinum plaque (or bedding your first groupie), and as such, basically every rock act worth their salt has, at some point, released a road video … and then released it again on the “Live” DVD. Though, in keeping with pretty much everything they do, 30STM have taken the concept to dizzying, unabashedly all-encompassing heights.

—- COMMENT ABOUT "THIS IS WAR"— DO READ IT IF YOU GET THE CHANCE! :-p!

I got lost in your latest album today. Simple as that!

If you remember that list that Jared made some 15000 years ago for ALO – "10 ALBUMS TO GET LOST IN" – or if you think any of you got lost in too many Pink Floyd albums when you were young…. Well that’s what I mean!

Jared (and Tomo and Shannon), I remember you talking about what you want your fans to get from "This Is War". You said something along the lines of "I want them to get an experience". Well…. You have succeeded, my friends. I lost myself in Stranger in a Strange Land and Alibi and Closer to the Edge and Stronger today (yeah, the last one is not exactly on the album, but there's still a piece of your souls in it, so it makes no difference). I lost myself today… not for the first time, I might add, in these songs.

There's no explaining to be done. You know what I mean. And though it sounds gratuitous coming from somebody you'll never know, who's using a pseudonym, and is writing to you in between these (no offence!) silly little comments on a public blog, I trust you can still take this as a heartfelt compliment and not dismiss it as a fading groupie-like reaction.

I could put on paper all the feelings that I felt while experiencing your music today, ranging from pure love to ultimate loneliness, but that would be inappropriate. Talking about music is like dancing about architecture, so I won't even give it a try. In lack of a better thing to say, I will only state "Keep writing what you write and keep doing what you do (all three of you, that is)!"

And tough (realistically) there's not that much chance you'll be reading this comment yourselves, there's one thing I'd like to add: looking back at the past year of my life, I realize that I have been influenced profoundly by your art and have managed to find my real self primarily because of your music. And since, statistically speaking, not all of your listeners are as extroverted and as open as I am, please take this thought and multiply it by 10.000… and that will give you a measure of how amazing you really are as artists. Congratulations!

While we're at it, some might wonder why I take the time (from my crazy schedule) to write these elaborate comments. If you didn't know better, you'd probably think I'm in love with your lead singer or something :) ))))) (no offense, Jared, I'm not!). Well, it's quite simple: 1) You have had an amazing influence on my life and if there's a chance in a million I can have about 0.0001% of that influence on YOUR lives, then it's worth the trouble! And 2) We are all cursed NOT to know what people REALLY think of us. Knowing how the world works, I do believe that in between all those dazzling photographer flashes, disgusting sycophants and on-the-clock-concert rehearsals, it's all too easy to lose yourselves in the midst of it all and disregard the art that got you there in the first place. So that's why I bother. :) Don’t lose yourselves. You're real. And it's art and your true feelings that got you where you are!

I can only hope that these otherwise silly looking affirmations find you in a state of mind where you are willing to believe… and receive… and hope. I am real. And your art is real. And your influence on me is real. And it's real for thousands of people like me.

Success is being brave enough to follow your dreams. So go be artists and never doubt that you will change people's lives by doing so!

PS: What'd you know.. I guess all this technology IS in fact bringing us together, rather than sending us apart! Hm… I guess I'll have to review my opinion on that one. :) )

The "Closer to the Edge" video is evidence that music is salvation and that, as different as we may be, music can be a very unifying force.

    Wow! AWESOME ARTICLE!

He said what every Echelon on Earth (and Mars lol) feels.

It was AMAZING read that. Really. I'm about to cry here.

And I first watch "CTTE" video like 2months ago and I just can't stop watching it. Besides, here in Brazil we are voting for this video EVERY SINGLE DAY to see it at #1 on TOP10MTV (Yesterday – 08/17 was #3 by the way). I speak for myself too, I was counting in how many minutes I can make 100 votes. And it took me only 19minutes. =D

And I'm here voting for like 10 or 11hours…

We're waiting you here, Jared, Tomo and Shannon.

We pomise you! We're gonna touch the sky!!!! :)

  • Jewell

YES, This Is Our Cult! YES, This Is Family!

Anyone and anything can save you, you just have to believe it!

  • Madi

  • Kirsty_A_x

Love Mars with a passion but only Jesus saves souls.

    • Pat Kaminsky

Only you can save your soul. No other person, or presumed higher being can do anything for you. Only you can. If believing in something bigger than yourself helps fine. But in the end you have to live with yourself. I thought the article was great, it hit the nail on the head. They really do include their fans like no other group. So show some love and go vote now at MTV VMA'S. RIGHT NOW! Then you can come back. If you are looking for words of wisdom listen to the Dali Lama, not to be saved. Just for comfort and to be uplifted.

  • Audrey

I believe that this article is completely right and the video is amazing.
