On Tuesday afternoon (December 13), 30 Seconds to Mars took home the inaugural Best Live MTV Performance award for their stirring, scintillating “Unplugged” version of “Hurricane.”

Thanks to the votes of their fans, 30STM withstood a late charge from Paramore’s “Brick by Boring Brick” to win the honor. Now, with their trophy firmly in hand, they’re reacting to their triumph — and, as always, sharing their glory with their fervent Echelon fanbase.

“This is so incredible. We had an amazing time doing ['Unplugged'], and thank you to everybody who voted,” frontman Jared Leto said. “Once again, the unstoppable Echelon. We love you guys.

“If it wasn’t for the Echelon, we wouldn’t have ever won a single award,” he continued. “I think that’s the blessing of living in this digital age, is that people have a voice, and the Echelon Nation out there has made their voice heard again and again, and we’re so proud that they’re able to gather together, to organize themselves, to fight for a common cause and to make dreams a reality. It’s pretty special.”

In a week when there was no shortage of highlights for the band — they were awarded their hard-earned gold record plaques for the This Is War album and entered the “Guinness Book of World Records” with a sold-out, celebratory show in New York — Leto counts their Best Live Performance win as one of the biggest moments. It was almost enough to bring a tear to his steely-blue eyes.

“We’re very surprised. … It’s been an insane week already. We got a gold record, we did a Guinness World Record-breaking show,” he laughed. “There’s gonna be a few tears rolling down these hardened, leathery, road-dog cheeks.”

Ahead of their performance at the Black Rabbit Music Festival, we sit down with Tomo Milicevic of 30 Seconds to Mars to find out what their plans are for the China tour, and why so many women toss their panties on stage during their performances.

You’re from LA but you have a sizable fan base in Europe. Why is it that so many American artists ignore the outside world?
We have always considered ourselves to be an international band. America is a big place, but the world as a whole is much, much bigger. We feel really lucky and grateful that we had the courage to think globally instead of just trying to stay in familiar, safe territory. Now we have the opportunity to come to so many wonderful and exciting places.

Is this your first time in China? What do you expect from this tour?
The first time we came to China was to shoot a music video for a song off of A Beautiful Lie called “From Yesterday.” To our knowledge, we were the first American rock band to shoot a video in its entirety in China. This is something that always made us proud. We are all lovers of Asian culture and we have always been very thankful and grateful that we were given the opportunity to shoot the video there in China. These will be the first shows we play in China and are very excited to finally come back and play shows for the Chinese audience. We expect people to let go and have the greatest night of their lives!

30 Seconds to Mars has the talent, looks and drama of a classic rock band. Ladies across China are eagerly awaiting your arrival. Is there anything you’d like to say to your adoring female fans?
We love you all!

It seems anyone with a computer is starting to mix their own music. How do you see the music world today and where do you see it going now that everyone with a laptop considers themselves a musician?
It’s really very exciting actually. We are on the verge of a new musical revolution. Because of the fact that anyone with the will and a desire to learn the craft of engineering sound can do so now for relatively little money, those doorways which were previously reserved for artists that have access to large and expensive studios are now open to a vast number of people who have talent and a voice to share with the world. In the coming years I expect we will see some exciting innovations in the way we listen to and experience music.

Have you ever thought of mixing Chinese elements into your music? The Chinese zither is quite nice and can be eerie and dark at times.
We are always looking for new ways to expand our sound so please point me in the direction of the nearest traditional Chinese musical instrument store!

Shot by Bartholomew Cubbins (also known as 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto), “Kings and Queens” is one of the few videos nominated for an award this year that doesn’t contain complicated special effects or wacky animation. Rather, “Kings and Queens” features little more than a small army of people riding around bicycles through abandoned streets in downtown Los Angeles, which sounds simple but is remarkably arresting. There’s something truly electric about the images that Leto captures, which is a testament to his abilities as a filmmaker and video artist.

You would probably think — based on, well, practically everything — that Jared Leto is not the kind of guy who likes to play things close to the vest (or studded leather jacket, or whatever). And in most instances, you’d be right. But not when it comes to 30 Seconds to Mars’ arrival at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. 30 Seconds To Mars brought the rock down to Mexico City for their MTV World Stage performance on Thursday, Aug. 26. Curiously though, Jared Leto blindsided us by debuting his blonde comb-over (and we’re clearly not complaining), paired with truly, truly sick animal-print sunglasses at the MTV World Stage press conference on Wednesday, Aug. 25.

But here comes the curious part — when 30 Seconds To Mars played Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional on Thursday, August 26, it looked like Jared Leto magically regrew the mohawk. Well, not in full, and it certainly was not the pomegranate mohawk of yore. Still, what’s up with the hair-tomorrow-gone-today mohawk magic? Does the photo of Jared’s blonde ‘do belie a mohawk-in-waiting in the back and top? Did he really flatten all of that hawk-ready hair into a new ‘do capable of going from zero to hawk, in, say, 30 seconds?

It’s 30 Seconds to Mars, and it’s six days until the rock band hits the House of Blues stage.

But while local fans are counting down to the show, the band has been counting up the accolades. Since the release of its 2009 album, “This Is War,” 30 Seconds to Mars has produced two No. 1 songs on the Billboard Alternative Songs charts, been nominated for three MTV Video Music Awards and crossed four continents on an epic tour.

The band, which consists of famous frontman Jared Leto, his brother Shannon and guitarist Tomo Milicevic, is in the middle of the 13 month-long Into The Wild Tour that kicked off a new North American leg in Mexico City last night.

Kicks sat down with Milicevic last week to discuss the band’s success and how they’ve created one of the most devoted fanbases in rock music.
