On Tuesday afternoon (December 13), 30 Seconds to Mars took home the inaugural Best Live MTV Performance award for their stirring, scintillating “Unplugged” version of “Hurricane.”

Thanks to the votes of their fans, 30STM withstood a late charge from Paramore’s “Brick by Boring Brick” to win the honor. Now, with their trophy firmly in hand, they’re reacting to their triumph — and, as always, sharing their glory with their fervent Echelon fanbase.

“This is so incredible. We had an amazing time doing ['Unplugged'], and thank you to everybody who voted,” frontman Jared Leto said. “Once again, the unstoppable Echelon. We love you guys.

“If it wasn’t for the Echelon, we wouldn’t have ever won a single award,” he continued. “I think that’s the blessing of living in this digital age, is that people have a voice, and the Echelon Nation out there has made their voice heard again and again, and we’re so proud that they’re able to gather together, to organize themselves, to fight for a common cause and to make dreams a reality. It’s pretty special.”

In a week when there was no shortage of highlights for the band — they were awarded their hard-earned gold record plaques for the This Is War album and entered the “Guinness Book of World Records” with a sold-out, celebratory show in New York — Leto counts their Best Live Performance win as one of the biggest moments. It was almost enough to bring a tear to his steely-blue eyes.

“We’re very surprised. … It’s been an insane week already. We got a gold record, we did a Guinness World Record-breaking show,” he laughed. “There’s gonna be a few tears rolling down these hardened, leathery, road-dog cheeks.”

NEW YORK — For a band that, over the past three years, has been no stranger to adversity — everything from battles with their label to scraps with censors and the occasional stage collapse — 30 Seconds to Mars had probably never had to deal with the kind of trouble that occurred during the encore of their record-setting show Wednesday night in New York.

Shot by Bartholomew Cubbins (also known as 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto), “Kings and Queens” is one of the few videos nominated for an award this year that doesn’t contain complicated special effects or wacky animation. Rather, “Kings and Queens” features little more than a small army of people riding around bicycles through abandoned streets in downtown Los Angeles, which sounds simple but is remarkably arresting. There’s something truly electric about the images that Leto captures, which is a testament to his abilities as a filmmaker and video artist.

You would probably think — based on, well, practically everything — that Jared Leto is not the kind of guy who likes to play things close to the vest (or studded leather jacket, or whatever). And in most instances, you’d be right. But not when it comes to 30 Seconds to Mars’ arrival at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Because while he’s certainly got big plans, he’s not about to reveal them just yet.

30 Seconds To Mars brought the rock down to Mexico City for their MTV World Stage performance on Thursday, Aug. 26. Curiously though, Jared Leto blindsided us by debuting his blonde comb-over (and we’re clearly not complaining), paired with truly, truly sick animal-print sunglasses at the MTV World Stage press conference on Wednesday, Aug. 25.

But here comes the curious part — when 30 Seconds To Mars played Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional on Thursday, August 26, it looked like Jared Leto magically regrew the mohawk. Well, not in full, and it certainly was not the pomegranate mohawk of yore. Still, what’s up with the hair-tomorrow-gone-today mohawk magic? Does the photo of Jared’s blonde ‘do belie a mohawk-in-waiting in the back and top? Did he really flatten all of that hawk-ready hair into a new ‘do capable of going from zero to hawk, in, say, 30 seconds?

How does Jared Leto’s hair achieve such miracles? Echelon, we know you have the answers. Give them to us! And watch 30 Seconds To Mars’ MTV World Stage performance on Friday, Sept. 24, on MTV Latin America.

Here we have the latest slab of epic awesomeness from Jared Leto and his merry band of musicians, 30 Seconds To Mars. Directed by Jared Leto (under the name Bartholomew Cubbins), this is “Closer To The Edge,” and it’s one of the better concert-oriented/live-footage videos we’ve seen in some time.

“Closer To The Edge” will, of course, be old news to 30STM fans, AKA The Echelon across the pond, but it’s only just now getting play in the States. It follows the band on their lengthy “Into The Wild” tour. Buzzworthy readers were already got a look behind the scenes of the tour, via Leto’s excellent tour diary series, but this video gives you a much more visceral and stylish peek into the world of a touring band.

We see some excellent performance shots, some great scenery and lots and lots of interaction with fans, which is clearly a priority for the band.

This year’s crop of nominated directors is an excellent mix of newcomers and veterans. In the latter category, you’ve got Hype Williams (nominated for Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind”), Francis Lawrence (Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”) and Dave Meyers (Pink’s “Funhouse”). The (relative) newcomers include Bartholomew Cubbins (the pseudonym used by Jared Leto, who directed his band 30 Seconds to Mars’ “Kings and Queens”) and Rich Lee (who directed Eminem’s “Not Afraid” and who has less than 10 years in the game.

The criteria for great direction is sort of vague, but for sheer accomplishments, the MTV Newsroom Blog thinks Leto might have the upper hand. “Kings and Queens” is gorgeous and epic, and was clearly logistically complicated. But all of the videos nominated are deserving.
